Adventures of a Mechanical Engineer: Life at

As an Intern Edition

Product Engineer Intern at John Deere (Dubuque, Iowa)

During the summer I spent three months in Dubuque, Iowa working for John Deere. I worked as a Product Engineering Intern in the Noise Vibration Harshness Department. In the short time I was there I learned so much in some of the fundamentals of what it takes to be an Engineer. The experience itself was challenging as I was far from my home in Texas. Of course, not as far as I was in Egypt, but nonetheless, it was quite some distance.

As I entered John Deere, I was given a warm welcome from my co-workers and truly felt like I was a part of the team. I was also occasionally tested on engineering fundamentals by my Supervisor who wanted to ensure I was prepared for the workplace. I was able to work in the manufacturing department, amongst others in the company. Most importantly, I was able to work on my intern project focusing on the increase of sound absorption in the CAB 544 Loader.

This would be one of my first projects assigned to me where I wouldn’t have a team to assist me. I was able to utilize other departments who helped identify leaks in some of their models. I was also able to learn how to utilize white noise to calculate sound absorption.
I also had the chance to sightsee and visit Chicago, one of the most amazing cities for structural engineering.

Overall the project was very insightful and helped me realize the potential I have to solve complicated problems. Most importantly I acquired the skills to increase sound absorption, utilize the Siemens Test system, time signal calculating, and signature throughput processing.
